About this tool

Useful for essays and assignments with a word limit, articles, product descriptions and talks: you see how many words you have written and how long the text takes to read.

A word is a run of letters or digits. Hyphenated words (“well-known”) and words with apostrophes (“don’t”) count as one; punctuation and emoji do not count. Reading time assumes 200 words per minute.

How to use

  1. Paste or type your text.
  2. The word count and the other figures update immediately.
  3. Copy any value with the button next to it.

Frequently asked questions

Do numbers count as words?

Yes, 2026 or 3.14 count as words, as in most word processors.

Why does the result differ from Word or Google Docs?

Editors treat hyphens, dashes and symbols like “—” differently. The difference is usually a few words per page at most.

How is reading time calculated?

The word count is divided by 200 — an average silent reading speed — and rounded up to the next minute.
